Journal - General Spiel
This part of the journal contains entries relating to computers in some manner or fashion, though not entries of a technical nature (they go in the technical section). Things like notes on small site tweaks can be found here and maybe the odd link or two.
dodgy upgrade? 22nd Jul 2003
From the phpinfo() return it looks like my host has recently upgraded to GD2.0.12 which should be a good thing. Unfortunately this upgrade seems to adversely affect the cron generated thumbnails (they look to be palette based now rather than truecolour).
Am just about to contact the hosting company to see whether they can backgrade to 2.0.9 or try a reinstall.
More playing (ok, fretful coding and hair pulling) has established that the problem lies in assigning values below 100 to the opacity parameter of the ImageCopyMerge function. Shall let Thomas Boutell know and hope the problem gets fixed soon.
ternery tutorial 21st Jul 2003
Decided to write a quick(ish) tutorial on Using the Ternery Operand within PHP and even learned a few things myself while writing it.
To access it, either click the link in the text above or use the float-down 'scriptix' menu and select 'tutorials'.
I will hopefully add more tutorials in the near future.
paginated results on journal pages 16th Jul 2003
Was reading the 'General Spiel' section of the journal and noted the nasty page length so ran up a quick paginator that should show only five results per page and intuitively add 'previous' 'next' links.
Am deliberating about adding a 'to-do list' section to the journal so I can actually have a reference of all the tasks I'm neglecting to do - suffice to say, that's on the 'to-do list' :o)
added a sitemap 15th Jul 2003
A few browsers, namely the old archaic ones and NS6 (which some may argue is also old and archaic) are failing to render the slide down menu at the top so I had to run up a quick sitemap.
Should also be useful for search engines once I start submitting this site to them again.
Simply accesses the same menu database as the rest of the site, so updating everything is as simple as adding or deleting a row in that table.
holding page 10th Jul 2003
The scriptix datagraphs area now has a holding page showing a couple of sample graphs which, after a bit of cleaning and updating, could well be released as a class distribution in the same manner as the thumbnailing class.
Have a few other things to do first though, so probably will not be for a week or two.
